Life as a slave for the world nobles wasn't easy, especially for a pretty girl like Beth. She'd always dreamed of freedom. But after a certain stubborn, red-headed pirate captain frees her from bondage, she's not altogether sure this was the saving grace she'd been praying for...

Beth Was Made Intentionally Weak
I've gotten a ton of questions regarding the obviously very weak personality of Beth, especially since I paired her up with a crew as ruthless as the Kid Pirates. Some think this was an accident, or that I didn't realize it at the time just how useless she appeared to be, but in reality, I wanted her to come off as meek and helpless.
With the publishing of the seventh chapter, 'Sold,' it gave the reason why. What with her abusive father and all, and being sold by him as a slave, I wanted to give it a logical reason for her being so weak. I guess I was playing on a thin line of making her an...anti-mary-sue? If that even exists? Not quite sure, but her flappable personality was planned, rest assured.
One might compare Beth to Lexi or Summer. Put beside those two characters, she seems absurdly underwritten and neglected. Lexi is strong-willed and sassy. Summer's got Nemesis and skill with her blades. Beth...she's just kind of there pretty much. There's a lot she wants to be able to do, or say, but at this moment her experiences in the past have pretty much molded her into this boring person who isn't spontaneous or adventurous at all. Surely, that'll change, especially since a weakling like her could never last long with Eustass Kid as a captain.

The Kid Pirates Interested Me
Over my couple years of reading One Piece fanfiction, I've rarely come across a story centered around the Kid Pirates. Yes, they aren't the main characters or anything, and we haven't been given much information as to what they're like and all of that, but it surprised me how very little people have written about them. One would think that with that much room to create up a possible scenario for what's been going on with them during the two year time skip, even before they were introduced, people would have a field day inventing and writing up origin stories or theories as to why Killer wears his mask all the time.
So it came as a shock when I researched a little into what other people were writing about them, and didn't find very much. That made it a little harder to write this story, since I wasn't sure what kind of reception or even readership it would maintain. I was pleasantly surprised once I started posting chapters though.
I guess because of the lack of content for Kid Pirates stories, a lot of people grab hold to the ones that are written, and this story took off pretty quickly. For awhile, it was my most popular story, even more so than 'The Life I Live' or 'Desires of Men' when it came down to average reviews per chapter and follows and faves. I attributed that to the fact that the Kid Pirates are just so cool to write. Kid is such an interesting and fun character to write, since he's so angry all the time.

Hiatus Has Hit Hard
If there are any eager readers hoping that I'll update it soon with a new chapter, I'm sorry to inform you that I still am at a standstill as far as what to write next. I had a plan in mind when first beginning it, and as new ideas have come through for other characters and such, and me being unable to just let go of a new story idea, this one's been put aside for such a long time. It wasn't intended to be postponed for so long. I expected to get back into it within the first month or so. But, of course, a long time after that later, and I've done nothing but make a new story cover for it. (I think it looks a lot cuter, honestly!)
I'm hoping the hiatus will end soon, or that something will give me more ideas and plans for the future with it. My greatest fear is that it will be abandoned. I've never not finished a story I've written online, so I'm hoping it won't be the first. Fingers crossed.
